Michelle Caithness is an experienced practicing artist, teacher and mentor, having run her own private mentoring business from Melbourne for some 10 years. Michelle is passionate about creative facilitation and assisting other artists to expand and consolidate their knowledge and skills. Bookings for one-to-one mentoring sessions in the gallery to review your work or to receive private tuition are available from the 22nd of May to the 7th of July.

A one-to-one mentoring session gives artists at any level of experience the opportunity to review and discuss their work to date with an experienced practicing artist. Traditionally, artists spend most of their time solving problems on their own which can be an isolating experience. Mentoring opens up a discussion about many aspects of the creative process in a constructive and supportive atmosphere. Examples may include the following:

  • Personal creative vision and what we are aiming to communicate
  • How our work is read by an audience
  • Strengths and weaknesses in the concept or construction of our work
  • Practical concerns about studio space and time limitations
  • Materials and technique
  • Exhibition of work and entering art competitions
  • Folio preparation

Participants bring a selection of their work for discussion. Any support material such as visual diaries etc. can be helpful too. If a piece of work is large and unpractical to bring a good quality photo will work. It is not necessary to bring ‘finished’ pieces or only work which is considered ‘successful’. Often the pieces which we consider failures hold great clues and information.
