This July, Queenscliff Gallery & Workshop exhibits artworks by Lucinda Tanner from her series Turn Over A New Leaf alongside works by artists from the Tiwi Islands, in so doing forging a meaningful link to the past for the Basel-based Australian artist, who, in 1999, spent six months working in the renowned Tiwi Design studio on Bathurst Island.
Rich in adventure, culture and learning, this experience resonates deeply with Lucinda. Developed in isolation, Tiwi Island art embraces ancient tradition, ceremony and the natural environment. Islanders collect ochre, harvest stringybark, and hand-carve painting ‘combs’ to create dazzling, traditional artworks.
More recent media include canvas, linen, paper, original limited-edition prints, and hand screen-printed textiles. Islanders learn and hone new techniques at local workshops, and in artist residencies around Australia.
*Official closing (in place of an official opening) due to Lucinda Tanner’s work being delayed in transit from Basel.
*Physical distancing prevents more than 15 people in the gallery at one time. Please come prepared to enjoy a crown spill into the gallery garden. And please, if you’re feeling unwell, stay at home (we need to keep the QG&W doors open!).
