The parachute object is the source for Seward’s imagery, continually creating storytelling in the absence of text. Her warehouse studio is filled with suspended vintage parachute canopies that provide constant inspiration. As part of her preparation and practice Sewards extensively researches her subject matter, always searching and probing for unique historical fragments. This research was evident in recent solo exhibitions entitled White Parachute and Flight from Silence.
Sewards printmaking techniques continually evolve and incorporate traditional intaglio printmaking, etching using photopolymer plates, and also contemporary digital technology.
As Dr. Julie Cotter wrote in her catalogue essay for Seward’s White Parachute exhibition, (subsequently featured in Print Council of Australia’s IMPRINT magazine):
‘Sewards imbues her work with a poetic stillness that suggests notions of reflection and passiveness.’
