Matoulas pares back the images to imbue the work with a simple directness devoid of gimmick or illusion.
It is a return to childlike honesty and directness. He does not want to hit viewers with meaning but hope that they can slowly absorb the images to find a meaning.
What is it? The images are about identity, place and perception – some have their beginnings in his migrant upbringing, some have a hidden social consciousness (flag, flower and scales), some start as aesthetic ideas.
