Project Description

Marie Antoinette through the Notebook

Printmaker Marion Manifold’s work is focused on female identity and body imaging.

Marion has held a life-long fear and fascination with France and the Revolution which led to an Australia Council for the Arts 3 month Paris residency researching Marie Antoinette through the Notebook of Ladies Attire in the Archives Nationales, Paris. The Notebook has fabric samples which were presented to Marie Antoinette to choose her daily dress. Marie Antoinette’s fashions – the patterns, objects and body imaging – contributed to her fate.

A facsimile of this Notebook will be exhibited at the Gallery.

A selection from this series of work will be exhibited. The linocuts are richly beaded and embroidered, or painted, some with silk appliqué, in keeping with Marie Antoinette’s seemingly luxurious lifestyle.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body and is a result of a 3 month Paris residency.
